Philadelphia Safe and Sound Receives Gift from Hooked on Phonics

Philadelphia, PA – Philadelphia Safe and Sound (PSS), a child advocacy and research organization, has received a product donation of almost $90,000 from Hooked on Phonics®. The reading and math programs, used to improve literacy and math skills, will serve more than 1,000 children in the PSS Network of Afterschool and Youth Development Programs.

“In celebration of our 20th anniversary, Hooked on Phonics is donating more than $1 million worth of reading programs to literacy organizations, institutions, libraries, and local programs to help an estimated 30,000 kids around the country learn to read” said Chip Paucek, CEO for Hooked on Phonics.

“This donation would not have been possible without the School District of Philadelphia, who was originally approached by the company,” said Anne L. Shenberger, President and CEO of PSS. “They generously made the connection to children in our afterschool programs.”

The programs will be used to enhance existing activities currently being implemented in PSS Network programs that help to improve reading, writing and math skills. Hooked on Phonics® Learn to Read is an award-winning program that uses proven learning methods to provide children with a strong foundation in phonics and reading. More than 1,400 reading programs are part of the donation which will be distributed to the PSS Network of afterschool programs according to age and focus. Programs range from Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read to Hooked on Math™.
