State Representative Payton Secures $50,000 for Afterschool Programs in the 179th District
Ten Philadelphia Safe and Sound Afterschool Programs to Receive $5,000 Each
State Representative Tony Payton, D-Phila., will present $50,000 to 10 afterschool programs located in the 179th District on Thursday, April 17 at 4 p.m. at the Hostos Charter School. The afterschool programs receiving the donation are part of the Philadelphia Safe and Sound Network of Afterschool and Youth Development Programs. The funds were secured from the Department of Community and Economic Development with the help of State Representative DeWeese and Philadelphia Safe and Sound. With this additional money, the programs will be able expand and/or enhance their programming for children and youth.
The following PSS-managed programs in Representative Payton’s district will receive $5,000 each:
1. ASPIRA of PA – Hostos Charter School 2. Ayuda Community Center – Hunting Park Christian Academy 3. Boys and Girls Club of Philadelphia – Northeast Frankford Site 4. Catholic Social Services – Casa del Carmen Site 5. Congreso de Latinos Unidos, Inc. – Taylor Elementary School Afterschool Program 6. Korean Community Development – Olney Annex 7. Korean Community Development – Olney Elementary School 8. Lutheran Children and Family Services – Overbrook Elementary School 9. Salvation Army – The Learning Zone 10. Variety Club – Olney High School
WHO: State Representative Payton; Philadelphia Safe and Sound President and CEO, Anne Shenberger; representatives from the afterschool programs; children from ASPIRA
WHAT: The event will include a presentation of funds to the afterschool programs and a Latin dancing demonstration by 1st graders attending the ASPIRA of PA afterschool program.
WHERE: Hostos Charter School, located at 4322 North 5th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19140.
WHEN: Thursday, April 17th, 2008 at 4 p.m.
WHY: The event is being held to acknowledge the receipt of these funds for the purpose of enhancing afterschool programming for children and youth in the 179th District to reduce violence and provide a safe haven in one of the City’s most dangerous areas. |
