Philadelphia Safe and Sound Responds to Council Resolution

Philadelphia, PA - Anne L. Shenberger, President and CEO of Philadelphia Safe and Sound, a nonprofit organization that promotes the health, safety and well-being of children, today commended Councilwoman Marian B. Tasco for introducing a resolution authorizing hearings to examine the operations of Philadelphia Safe and Sound.

“We welcome the opportunity to fully explain to City Council how Philadelphia Safe and Sound operates and supports hundreds of provider organizations throughout the city who are serving our young people. Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about Philadelphia Safe and Sound, and this will give us an opportunity to answer and correct them. We are, of course, open to suggestions on how Philadelphia Safe and Sound can operate more effectively,” she said.

“We are cognizant that we have a fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers of Philadelphia, and it’s important that we operate in a transparent manner. This has been a challenging time for Philadelphia Safe and Sound and provider organizations during the transition from one administration to the other.”

“We all need to be mindful that what’s at stake is the health and welfare of our city’s children who now attend afterschool programs and other activities that are important for their growth,” Ms. Shenberger said.

Ms. Shenberger has served as President and CEO of Philadelphia Safe and Sound since 2006. She had previously been Director of the Southeast Region Office of Children, Youth and Families of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. She is a graduate of Gettysburg College and has a Master of Social Work from Bryn Mawr College.
